Comprehensive Treatment Options for Bone Loss

Let us restore the health and beauty of your smile.

About Bone Loss

Patients who have lost a significant amount of bone tissue because of osteoporosis, gum disease, or any other reasons often experience cosmetic and functional problems with their smile. Dr. Marc Purdy treats bone loss using innovative techniques to replace and rebuild bone tissue. Patients who are undergoing a dental implant procedure may need a bone graft to ensure the implants have a solid foundation.

Effects of Bone Loss

Bone Loss & Dental Implants in Ithaca, NYEven a single missing tooth can trigger bone loss. As soon as the root is missing, bone starts to deteriorate because there is no longer anything stimulating the jaw bone.

For many patients, losing bone in the jaw can cause changes in the appearance of the jaw and sagging or drooping cheeks. Some people experience jaw pain and have bite problems because of misalignment. If you plan on getting dental implants to replace missing teeth, you may need a bone graft if there is not enough bone available to support the implant. Without timely treatment, you may end up with collapsed sinuses that put stress on the teeth and unpredictable outcomes with certain procedures.

Causes of Bone Loss

You may never know how much bone you have lost until you come in for a comprehensive evaluation with x-rays. The progression of bone loss varies from person to person and may be triggered by lifestyle factors, disease, and the aging process. Some of the most common causes of bone loss include:

Procedures to Restore Lost Bone

Dr. Purdy has extensive experience performing bone restoration procedures at his practice so you will not need to be referred out to a specialist. He offers the basic bone grafting procedure and also performs ridge augmentation to rebuild the structure of the jaw. Dr. Purdy uses the guided tissue regeneration technique with many surgical procedures, including bone grafts, tooth extractions, dental implants, and gum surgery to speed up the recovery time. When this technique is used in conjunction with bone grafting, the bone grows faster and is much stronger.
